40th Sandcastle Esquisse

The Annual Sandcastle Esquisse was a windy blast on February 20 with great people and food at Kailua Beach Park. In celebration of our event's 40th anniversary, we wanted to look ahead respecting our diverse past and made this year's theme: "Sculpting Futures!"

Starting at 8am, teams were able to get a head-start on picking their mound and get digging. 8 huge teams of professionals and students competed for our unique and beautiful plaques made by this year's PR Committee: Rubinson Intong, Melise Nekoba, and Kris Jugueta. The plaques were made for the four winning categories: Best Overall, Best Representation of Theme, Best Use of Material, and Best Team Spirit.

As the sculpting continued, AIAS fired up the grills and got cooking around 10am. By noon, everyone gathered around our tents for free hot dogs, burgers, and drinks as the judges decided this year's winners. After some tough decisions, the four winning teams were: PBR-Best Overall, AHL-Best Representation of Theme, CDC/Collaborative Studio-Best Use of Material, and Yabai Oishi- Best Team Spirit!

Over 100 people attended this year's open and fun event. As people started packing up after a day of hard work and good food, we at AIAS celebrated a job well done by diving into the ocean and having some fun together!

We look forward to next year's Sandcastle Esquisse and all the people we'll see again. Until then, take a look at some of the photos taken throughout the day by our Treasurer Austin Chun, Incoming Secretary Cel Guarin, and PR Committee Rubinson Intong!
